Cuisinart Convection Oven

Review of the Cuisinart TOB-165 Convection Toaster/Broiler

If you’re wanting the convenience of a convection oven but are short on space, then the Cuisinart convection oven may be able to come to your rescue.

Those unfamiliar with convection cooking may wonder what all the fuss is about. Convection ovens move hot air around and onto the food, which means you’re using less energy and time (as much as 25% less!).

Additionally this process helps keep meats moist, crusts flaky, and generally makes for very even results (meaning no more moving around those cookie racks!).

Positive Features

cuisinart convection oven The compact nature of this toaster oven/broiler is one of its biggest selling points. You can still cook a four pound chicken or a full size pie in it, but not eat up all your free counter space. It’s also no where near as heavy as anticipated coming in at 20 pounds (and honestly most people aren’t going to be moving it around the kitchen much).

The 1500 watts of power definitely speed up the cooking time for meals, and the oven includes a two-position rack and a baking pan for broiling. The touch pad is clean and sensible, with customizable settings that are easily programmed into the machine. It’s also impressive to see the accuracy of heat – for bakers you’ll love the consistency.

From a safety perspective, the oven will shut itself off after four hours. And since you’re not likely to do a ton of slow-cooking in the Cuisinart convection oven, that really shouldn’t impede any of your culinary efforts.

At first glance there appear to be two minor design flaws exist in this toaster oven/broiler. The first is that the crumb catcher is very difficult to access. The second is that the heat reflector in the top of the oven cannot be cleaned. There is no way to remove it and the heating elements are right there between you and that surface.

There are a few other considerations that come from the consumer reviews that follow here.

Consumer Reviews

The Cusinart convection oven has gotten a lot of good consumer feedback. People love the fact that this toaster / broiler is big on the inside, but conservatively sized for the kitchen counter. The performance of the oven seems consistent with what you want in convection engineering – evenness of heating and faster cooking times.

Another feature people mentioned liking was the alarm that keeps beeping until you go get your food. There’s no way to forget about what’s in the oven!

On the down side, one person reported their broiler pan buckled with use and rusted. Another consumer mentioned that the toasting function is uneven (but that’s a common flaw in all toaster ovens). A third issue is the angle at which you have to remove the rack.

If there’s anything on it and you need to take it out at an angle, its easy to spill food or grease.

Finally there are some reports of paint peeling near the door. It’s uncertain how predominant these flaws are throughout the product line.

  • Fast, even countertop cooking
  • Baking, roasting, broiling and toasting capacity
  • 1/2 cubic foot interior
  • Programmable touchpad
  • Nonstick interior
  • Slide out crumb tray
  • Baking pain with broil insert
  • 3 year warranty

Considering that consumers who found some design flaws still gave the Cusinart convection oven high satisfaction ratings, this seems like a really solid choice for your kitchen.

It’s dependable and offers enough cooking space for small families to enjoy.
